Circuit Launches Electric Shuttle Services in Rockaways and Brentwood: A Step Towards Sustainable Transportation

In a significant stride towards sustainable transportation, Circuit Transit Inc. has officially launched its electric shuttle services, Rockaway Rides and BrentwoodGo, following a generous $7 million award from the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA). This funding is part of the $85 million New York Clean Transportation Prizes, which are administered by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). The initiative aims to provide accessible, affordable, and environmentally friendly transportation options for residents and visitors in Long Island and the Rockaways.

The Launch of Rockaway Rides

On September 23, 2023, NYSERDA and LIPA announced the launch of the Rockaway Rides shuttle service, which operates every weekday from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, extending its hours to 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. This service is designed to cater to the transportation needs of underserved communities, particularly in areas where public transit options may be limited.

The Rockaway Rides service follows a successful nine-month soft launch, during which the program demonstrated its potential to reduce emissions from the transportation sector—a significant contributor to harmful emissions in New York State. By providing a fully electric shuttle service, Circuit aims to make a meaningful impact on local air quality and promote greener transportation alternatives.

BrentwoodGo: Expanding Accessibility

In addition to Rockaway Rides, Circuit is also introducing BrentwoodGo, a free on-demand shuttle service in Brentwood, Long Island. This service will transition to a flat fare of $2.50, making it an affordable option for residents. Both programs are designed to enhance mobility in their respective communities, ensuring that residents have access to reliable transportation without the burden of high costs.

A Fleet of Eco-Friendly Vehicles

Circuit’s shuttle services utilize a diverse fleet of electric vehicles, including six Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)-compliant vans. These vehicles operate within geo-fenced coverage areas, ensuring that they serve key destinations effectively. In Rockaway, the shuttle service connects residents to major locations such as the Rockaway Beach boardwalk, MTA subway stations, and the downtown area of Far Rockaway.

Moreover, Circuit has prioritized local employment by hiring driver ambassadors from the Rockaways and neighboring areas of Queens and Brooklyn. This not only supports the local economy but also fosters a sense of community among the shuttle service operators and riders.

Community Engagement and Artistic Collaboration

In a unique touch, two of the electric vehicles feature artwork by Brooklyn-based contemporary artist José Parlá. This collaboration reflects the vibrant culture of the area and enhances the visual appeal of the shuttle service. The artwork is inspired by a mural created by Parlá for the new Far Rockaway Library, further establishing a connection between the shuttle service and the local community.

Support from NYSERDA and LIPA

The launch of these electric shuttle services has garnered strong support from NYSERDA and LIPA. Alexander Esposito, CEO of Circuit, expressed gratitude for the commitment shown by both organizations towards electric transportation. He emphasized the importance of community support in making this initiative a reality, stating, “Our whole team is thrilled to improve access and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Rockaways and now Brentwood.”

Doreen M. Harris, President and CEO of NYSERDA, highlighted the significance of the project in advancing clean and affordable transportation options. She noted that the Rockaways and Long Island now have a model that could be replicated statewide, promoting the adoption of electric vehicles and enhancing access to sustainable transportation.

John Rhodes, acting CEO of LIPA, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that the electric shuttle service addresses both climate concerns and critical community transportation needs. He stated, “This initiative not only helps to solve the pressing climate crisis but also meets a critical community need.”

Conclusion

The launch of Circuit’s Rockaway Rides and BrentwoodGo programs marks a pivotal moment in the push for sustainable transportation solutions in New York. By providing accessible, affordable, and eco-friendly shuttle services, Circuit is not only addressing the transportation needs of local communities but also contributing to the broader goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions. As these initiatives take flight, they pave the way for a greener, more connected future for residents of Long Island and the Rockaways.
