Transitioning to Sustainable Transportation: SAGLEV and AUATON Join Forces

In a significant move towards sustainable transportation in Nigeria, SAGLEV, a pioneering electric vehicle (EV) assembler, has partnered with the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON). This collaboration aims to provide affordable financing options for union members, facilitating their transition to electric vehicles amidst rising fuel prices and maintenance costs.

Addressing the Challenges of E-Hailing Drivers

The partnership comes at a crucial time when many e-hailing drivers are grappling with the financial strain caused by escalating fuel prices and the high costs associated with maintaining internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles. The rising cost of living has made it increasingly difficult for drivers to sustain their livelihoods, prompting a search for more viable alternatives.

During an EV awareness workshop held in Lagos, titled “The Importance of Embracing Electric Vehicles in the E-Hailing Industry,” SAGLEV’s CEO, Dr. Olugbenga Faleye, emphasized the urgent need for drivers to adopt electric vehicles. He stated, “It feels impossible to make a living in e-hailing now without going to EV. One cannot make a profit using an internal combustion engine at this period in time.” Dr. Faleye highlighted that transitioning to EVs would not only reduce maintenance and operational costs but also contribute to environmental sustainability.

Empowering E-Hailing Drivers

The workshop aimed to empower e-hailing drivers by providing them with insights into the benefits of electric vehicles. Dr. Faleye noted that the collaboration with AUATON would enable SAGLEV to reach a broader audience within the transportation sector, offering them sustainable solutions that enhance profitability. He expressed confidence in the partnership, stating, “We believe this would allow us to work directly with them.”

AUATON’s chairman for Business Partnerships and Proposals, Comr. Jolaiya Seun Moses, echoed Dr. Faleye’s sentiments, describing the collaboration as a significant step forward for the union. He acknowledged the pressing issue of fuel costs, particularly after the removal of fuel subsidies, which has left many drivers struggling to make ends meet. “A lot of people lost their cars to car owners, and most importantly, no profit to take home again,” Moses explained.

Exploring Sustainable Solutions

In response to these challenges, AUATON has been exploring various solutions, including compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric vehicles. Moses highlighted the financial benefits of transitioning to EVs, stating, “An average driver spends nothing less than N35,000 on fuel daily. But with EV, you are looking at spending between N2,500 and N4,000.” This substantial difference in daily expenses could lead to significant savings, potentially increasing drivers’ profits by over N31,000 per day.

Moses also pointed out the advantages of EVs in terms of maintenance. Unlike petrol-powered vehicles, electric vehicles have fewer components, which translates to lower maintenance needs. “Our members struggled to maintain petrol-powered cars. However, EVs have fewer issues, no oil changes, and reduced maintenance needs,” he noted, emphasizing the convenience and cost savings that electric vehicles offer.

Comprehensive Workshop Insights

The workshop provided a platform for drivers to learn about the workings of electric vehicles, payment modalities, and the details of the partnership between SAGLEV, AUATON, and Alternative Bank, which is facilitating financing for the program. This comprehensive approach ensures that drivers are well-informed and equipped to make the transition to electric vehicles.

Conclusion: A Game Changer for E-Hailing Drivers

The partnership between SAGLEV and AUATON marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s transportation landscape. By providing affordable financing options and promoting the adoption of electric vehicles, this collaboration aims to alleviate the financial burdens faced by e-hailing drivers. As the industry shifts towards sustainable transportation, drivers can look forward to enhanced profitability, reduced operational costs, and a more environmentally friendly mode of transport.

With the support of innovative solutions and strategic partnerships, the future of e-hailing in Nigeria appears brighter, paving the way for a more sustainable and profitable transportation ecosystem.
